Today's guest is Kimberley Record, self-image coach and author of Finding Your Forever Body: A 10-Step Guide to Breaking The Diet Cycle For Good. We'll chat about what got her into the health coaching space and how she was able to get rid of her scale entirely.

Kimberley grew up with the typical problem of unhealthy, unrealistic expectations that led her to have a difficult relationship with food. It wasn't until she was talking to a modeling agency that she realized how damaging those expectations were.
Kimberley runs the Stop Self Sabotage Masterclass, in which she teaches the 3 little known secrets for women to break their self sabotaging habits, even if they've tried everything before.

The most common obstacle that causes self-sabotage is perfectionism and holding yourself to an impossible expectation, then punishing yourself for falling short. We can start to unravel that by relearning how to listen to our intuition, listen to our bodies, and develop habits based on who our ideal future self is and how he or she wants to show up in the world.

Magic Barclay:

Welcome back to a Magical Life. I'm your host, magic Barclay, and today I'm again joined by Kimberly Record, the author of Finding Your Forever Body, a 10 step Guide to Breaking the Diet Cycle for Good. Welcome back, Kim. Thank you Magic. My pleasure. Now, I know you've been doing some exciting things in the world of Masterclass, and you've been running these for quite some time now. Can you tell us a little bit about your fantastic masterclass and what that can do for people out there?

Kimberley Record:

Yeah, so the, the masterclass I've been running is, is quite simply called the Stop Self Sabotage Masterclass, and. What I cover in it is Three secrets, three little known secrets to help women break their self sabotaging habits, even if they've tried everything before.

Magic Barclay:

There are a lot of people who who think they've tried at all, but they have not kind of got to the root of what I've discovered actually works. Beautiful. I think we all need to do that. Now. Today we're actually talking about how to detach from conditioning. Can you explain why that's important and how we do that?

Kimberley Record:

Yeah, so it is, probably the biggest cause, biggest root cause of self-sabotaging behavior. For women especially because, I'm not sure you know, how many of your clients' magic you've heard say they're perfectionists. Right. I think it's a very common thing in women that we, we have this crazy expectation of ourselves to, perfection in everything, you know? Uh, it shows up a lot in, in health and wellness. Habits. Um, but it extends to everything from business to relationships, to parenting, to housekeeping, to, you know, general existence as a woman right? We, generally have this expectation of ourselves that are so high and unrealistic and actually unnecessary to really be able to live out fully, you know, joyful, purposeful. And I'm a recovering one, so I know this very, very well. And, so what happens is we tie into, expectations and standards that are set for us. And we get conditioned by them everywhere we go. You know, it's in. the stores, it's in the magazines. It's in social media. It's, you know, even online influencers. Now you should see the filters, right? We, we see the people using filters all the time to make themselves look more perfect and, and it's perpetuating the problem. But because it's literally impossible to meet up to perfect standard. Self sabotage is kind of this, this punishment that we do to ourselves for not measuring up. And so it, and I think for a lot of women, it's happening on a subconscious level because as we get conditioned, we start to tie our self worth into how well we are measuring up to these standards and. Again, because it's literally impossible to measure up to the perfection that we see everywhere. Especially when things are so photoshopped and filtered and all of that these days, it's bound to happen. You know, self-sabotage is bound to happen. When we are coming from this place of I'm not enough, I don't measure up

Magic Barclay:

very much so, So how can people actually break from the conditioning in some simple ways? Because I mean, we're bombarded with it from childhood, as we mentioned in the last episode. So how can you actually distinguish what is true and real to you, and what is conditioning that you've just accepted or been subject to? Kind of now think is true and real.

Kimberley Record:

Yeah. Well this is where, this is where a lot of self-trust has to come into play and, learning or relearning to trust ourselves and our intuition and. Because we are, we're constantly getting signals from our, bodies. you know, cause our bodies are really good at communicating to us when things aren't aligning, when we feel physical, symptoms of anxiety, when we can't sleep or we have physical symptoms of indigestion. Like these are all signs from our bodies that things are not right. And so, there's a few layers to it, but one of the most important things that we can do is to take a step back from, external influences. Stop scrolling your news speeds for a while. Stop reading magazines. Looking elsewhere for expert advice. Stop looking to all the new latest nutrition articles for that perfect solution to your diet. You know, start to listen a little bit more to what your body's communicating to you, because it, it is going to tell you, it's going to tell you when things aren't aligned and that, I mean, it's a process, you know, there's, there's intuitive eating. You know, they're learning how to do that a little bit better because we've been, so, taught how to tune out of our bodies with the diet industry, you know, we, we, we are told exactly what to eat, exactly how much to put on our plates, exactly what time of day to eat, when to drink our water. Like we're, we're told to do all these things. And so we're really, being programmed to tune out of our bodies, where if we really start to pay more attention, it'll tell us, it'll tell us what it needs, it'll show in the sign. So it's learning how to interpret the signs, and then also being able to trust yourself to respond in the way that doesn't involve listening to, the latest experts article, right? Because some of this stuff might work for you and some of it won't. There's not one perfect diet on the planet. but I think another really important part of that is because one of the problems that has us not able to tune in as well is an overload of the processed. And the impact of that on our, systems, I think it just throws everything completely out of balance. So when there's, you know, these excess preservatives and excess, refined sugars and all of those things, it does make it a little more difficult. So paying more attention to food quality is important. but that's just on the, physical aspect, you know, the nutrition and the, and the fitness. And that piece, learning to trust yourself more. And then, and then there's the rest of life, you know, and I think where the rest of life can be giving you clues is also in those signals. In those signals of, how stressed are you? How, joyful are you feeling? How grateful are you feeling when you wake up in the morning? You know, if those things are missing. And there's a lot more stress. that's probably a really good indication that you don't have enough in your life that's really aligned with your values and starting to explore that. But, it can be a big undertaking. So sometimes the, food and the nutrition piece is an easy way to start, you know, easier way to you to start to trust yourself a little bit more. and then it probably will extend to the rest of life eventually. yeah, the, the physical health aspect is usually the easiest to start with.

Magic Barclay:

Great. I think we've really covered a lot in a short space of time, and I'm really grateful that you're sharing this with the listeners. What's something that you feel they need to hear that we haven't talked about?

Kimberley Record:

I would say that, one of the things I talk about in my masterclass is the a connection of our habits, to our identity and, and who we are being in the world. Because the habits, when we really break them down, it's more about what we're doing every day and it's really about who we're being and how we're showing up so that we can feel the way we wanna. And so it's not about having the perfect, routine every single day, doing the same things, every single, you know, at the same time every day. It really is about developing the habit of, of doing the things that will help you feel the way you really wanna feel in your life. And, and that starts with a vision, you know, looking forward to the future and, Creating a vision for yourself of how, how you wanna feel and what it's going to require of you as far as who you are being and how you're showing up in the world. To start to be more consistent with, with your everyday habits and be more committed to your everyday habits. There's, there is a lot of research that's come out over the last few years. Even some, some new books on habits where they, they, they talk about that identity, habit, connection. How important that that is. And that's a, that's a big reason why people can't keep them up over the long term. A big reason why people self-sabotage is because usually they're trying to do things living into a new identity, but they're still, they're still identifying with their outdated identity, if that makes sense. So, so I think that that's a really important piece to, to keep in mind when you are looking at. Setting goals for yourself and the things that you want to a accomplish, and the new habits you wanna develop is, is really looking to align it with your ideal future self and how here she w wants to show up.
